Comparative Adjectives
Comparative Adjectives in Spanish allow us to describe and compare the qualities of a person, action or thing.
There are different formulas we can learn to master them that you will find below.
Uses
1. Comparative Adjectives describe two people, two activities or two things which are different.
más/menos + adjective + que
The formula más/menos + adjective + que can be translated as adjective (er) + than or more/less + adjective + than (This house is bigger than mine – That book is more interesting than this one) in English.
verb + más/menos que
The formula verb + más/menos + que can be translated as verb + more/less than (I study more than my best friend) in English.
más/menos + noun + que
The formula más/menos + noun + que can be translated as more/less + noun + than (There are less pedestrians in the park today than a week ago) in English.
Irregular Comparatives
*Now, when we compare nouns with numbers we use “de” instead of “que”:

tan + adjective + como
The formula tan + adjective + como can be translated as as + adjective + as (He’s as tall as his brother) in English.
tanto(s), tanta(s) + noun + como
“tanto”, “tantos”, “tanta” and “tantas” can be translated as as much or as many in English.
Remember: “tanto”, “tanta”… has to agree in gender and number with the noun that it modifies.
The formula tanto(s), tanta(s) + noun + como can be translated as as much/as many + noun + as (There’s as much noise today as there was last night ) in English.
verb + tanto como
The formula verb + tanto como can be translated as verb + as much (He cooks as much as his brother) in English.
*“tan”, “tanto”, “tanta”… are also used to emphasize something.
Superlative Adjectives
Superlative Adjectives in Spanish allow us to compare people or things and put one of them at the top or bottom of a quality or category.
article + más/menos + adjective
The formula article + más/menos + adjective can be translated as most/least + adjective or article + adjective + est (This house is the biggest) in English.
article + noun + más/menos + adjective
article + noun + más/menos + adjective + de + group
