Plural Forms of Nouns in Spanish

Singular vs Plural

QUIZ YOURSELF

The plural in Spanish is very similar to the plural in English. In general terms, we simply add an “s” to the word we want to pluralize. Nevertheless, there are some irregular plurals that follow a different pattern. We’ve divided plural forms in Spanish into 5 simple rules that are easy to follow.

Remember: in the plural,
articles, both definite (“el” and “la”) and indefinite (“un” and “una”) change to their plural form (“los”, “las”, “unos”, “unas”) and have to agree with the gender (masculine or feminine) of the noun:

Singular
Plural
La casa (The house)
Las casas (The houses)
Una flor (a flower)
Unas flores (some flowers)

Adjectives must also agree with the noun in both gender (masculine or feminine) and number (singular or plural):

Singular
Plural
La casa es grande
Las casas son grandes
(The house is big)
(The houses are big)

*When we’re talking about a mixed group or two or more people, things or places of different genders we use the masculine plural:

1 niño + 1 niña = los niños
1 boy + 1 girl = the children
unos niños
some children
dos niños
two children
3 actrices+ 2 actores = los actores
3 actresses + 2 actors = the actors
unos actores
some actors
cinco actores
five actors
madre + padre = padres
mother + father = parents
hijo + hija = hijos
son + daughter = children
hermano + hermana = hermanos
brother + sister = siblings
